What Is Hidradenitis Suppurativa?
Hidradenitis suppurativa is a long-term inflammatory skin condition that causes painful lumps, abscesses, and sometimes tunnels under the skin in areas where skin rubs together, like the armpits, groin, buttocks, and under the breasts. It heals slowly, may drain fluid, and can scar over time. HS is not contagious and is related to inflammation around hair follicles.
Common Symptoms:
- Blackheads or small pits on the skin surface.
- Painful, pea-sized lumps under the skin that may last weeks or months.
- Bumps that leak pus or fluid, sometimes with odor.
- Tunnels (sinus tracts) beneath the skin connecting lesions.
- Scarring and thickened skin in recurrent areas.
